Junior Speech Page
In addition to our competition team, we are offering a Junior Speech Club! The goal of Junior Speech is to provide exposure to Stoa speech and debate through learning the grammar and forms of competitive speech by:
Studying the categories of speech, and identifying their distinguishing characteristics.
Practicing speaking in club using published speeches, literature, and poetry in order to grow in vocal quality, language analysis, and confidence.
Preparing a platform speech throughout the year to be used in competition at a junior tournament in the later spring.
Students, with the aid of their parents, should expect to:
Practice reading aloud at home together on a weekly basis
Craft a platform speech over the course of the year (this will be broken down into steps)
Compete in a tournament at least once during the course of the year
Junior speech is our “pre-team,” at Fortitude. We hope to give our younger students a bump up in their speaking skills, so that when they reach Sr. competition age (12), they will be more prepared to enter the field!
Time: Junior speech will meet twice a month (the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month) for 1.5 hours each time. Parents will need to attend with their students. Class size will be limited.
Eligibility: Students aged 7 by October 1, and UNDER 12 by October 1. All families need to read and agree with the Fortitude Statement of Faith. Our league is exclusively for independently home schooled students. All students participating in club time and tournaments cannot be enrolled in a charter school or public school. Here are the full eligibility rules.
Cost: $50, per student, per year
